New Math Enrichment Program for Rachel Carson Elementary!

Math Challenge is designed to give elementary students opportunities to sharpen their mathematical problem-solving skills. There will be 15 sets of challenges every other week starting in late September and ending at the end of May.

Throughout the challenges, the program covers problem solving strategies such as draw a picture or model, make an organized list, look for a pattern, working backward, and guess and check.

Here is how to participate:

  • Go to our school Math Challenge page at https://www.mathinaction.org/rachel-carson.html. Print out the current Math Challenge. Please write your name, grade, and your teacher’s name neatly.
  • Solve as many problems as you can. There is a minimum number of questions required for each grade. Completing the minimum number of questions is deemed as a qualified submission. We encourage you to discuss strategies and solutions with your parents and siblings.
  • Submit your solutions by the due date. Bring your solution to the office or to your teacher by the due date. (Wednesday 1:50 PM).
  • Check online to see solutions when they are available.
  • Check if you win a prize. Prize winners are randomly selected from bi-weekly qualified submissions. Announcements will be made the following week via Falcon Flyer.

We will keep track of your submissions. June 2020, we will give recognition to students who at least complete 10 sets of challenges.

The program is completely free and no sign-up is necessary. This is a great opportunity for families to be involved and enjoy math through fun and engaging math problems. We encourage parents and siblings to get involved in discussing and solving them. Schedules and problem-solving strategies are available at www.mathinaction.org.

The first math challenge will be available online on September 27th. You have only a few days to complete the first math challenge. Due date is October 3rd (no later than 3:20 p.m.). Have fun doing math!
